The Mystical “Miss O”

The Mystical “Miss O”

Years ago, I designed the CD cover art for a talented singer-songwriter from Italy, Odette di Maio. As she is also a good friend of mine, we have stayed in touch over the years and I was delighted when she recently asked for some assistance creating a visual identity for her new musical project, Miss O. The brief was simple: create a logotype that speaks to the dark, mystical side of the music as well as some of the vintage electronics used. Below are some photographs that I applied some wear and tear to as well as the new logotype. The photography was done by a friend of the band, whose name I don’t currently have – will update this post when I receive it!

Dual Identity

Dual Identity

To kick off 2011, I thought I’d put up a recent freelance project or two. Currently freelancing full-time for an ad agency called Cline, Davis & Mann, I haven’t had as much time to offer my design services to others but am happy to show two of my favorite projects from this past fall.

When the portfolio manager and owner of a private, angel investment fund contacted me about providing an identity for his New York-based company, Ataraxy International, I was interested to know more not just about his company, but about Nomad Yogi, another off-shoot of this brilliant person’s unique personality. It became clear to me that there needed to be TWO identities created, each separate and different from the other, but sharing similar design elements. One of Yossi’s requests was that the business card share information for both of these identities. Once the two icons were created, this calling card made sense visually and I believe Yossi was happy with the result.

Below is a suggestion for the application of the new Ataraxy identity to the website in it’s current state at the time of this project.

Storyboards

Storyboards

Creating storyboards is one of my favorite things to do. While at MSM, I’ve designed complex storyboards for large-scale multimedia presentations at shows like CES, Photokina, and PRINT. I’ve also designed, directed and animated plasma presentations. In the example below (created at MSM for Johnson & Johnson),  I was responsible for writing the script, creating new vector illustrations while integrating some stock, and designing the storyboard for this :60 second flash animation. View the entire storyboard (1MB pdf)

Working for Non-Profits

Working for Non-Profits

Occasionally, I have the opportunity to design for a good cause. It is really a true pleasure to offer design services to a group that benefits others. During my time at MSM, I worked on many of these projects including graphic support for Bivona, a child advocacy center (shown above and below), and the YWCA. The illustration below was designed as the icon for the YWCA’s yearly charity luncheon which raises tens of thousands of dollars for women in need. The YWCA board of Rochester, NY felt the icon described their brand so well that they have continued to use this illustration in much of their collateral and other events, and have even gone so far as to produce silk scarves and custom pins using the design to help raise more funds.
